2017 National Soapbox Final

The 2017 National Soapbox competition final was held in the Royal Kilmainham hospital, Dublin on Tuesday 7th November.

EDIC Sligo’s two category finalists, Ms Genevieve Cox (under 19 category from Sligo Grammar School) and Mr Kieran Timmons (over 19 category) went up against the best the country had to offer with some exceptional performances particularly in the under 19 category.

The theme for the debate final remained the same as the regional one - ‘Brexit – Irelands Opportunity’ and as such both competitors had time to further polish their speech in the hope of gaining the national 2017 Soapbox title in their respective sections.

8 entrants battled it out in both categories and whilst Genevieve performed exceptionally well she fell just short of the top two positions of runner-up and winner. Mr Kieran Timmons however brought the senior title back to Sligo after winning his category with a top class display in public speaking.

Minister of State Mr Sean Kyne awarded the prizes and commended all who took part with the high level of public speaking on display.

Mr Timmons received his national prize of €1,000 and a weekend trip to Brussels to see the EU Parliament buildings courtesy of MEP Mairead McGuinness.
